Anorexia affects alot of individuals today and is more common in teenage girls than any other age group, but it can occur at any time in life. It is a disease centred around control and it’s progression is not helped by the media and how girls and boys should look based on peers such as celebrities who promote a very strict diet to be extremely thin. When someone with this illness looks in the mirror and sees a fat person, they are suffering from what is called body dismorphia and cannot really see themselves for how they look. The only time Mary Ellen would promote the use of anti-depressants is in the case of anorexia or bulemia to cause an increase in appetite in the individual. A host of diseases is common amongst this population such as osteroperosis, hair loss, brittle bones and sarcopenia which is the wastage of precious muscle. Brendan Egan has excellent you tube videos out on the damages caused by sarcopenia and Mary attended a nutrition conference with him speaking last year. She also saw the damage that being bed ridden for more than two weeks can do to an unwell individual.
